It’s easy to fall in love with fall blooming asters! Prized for their colorful flowers that bloom in late summer through early fall, asters are hardy perennials that will perform year after year in Long Island gardens. Monarch butterflies adore the flowers – in shades of pink, purple, and blue – as a needed source of late summer/early fall nectar.
For best results, plant asters in full sun locations that offer moist, yet well-drained soils. Shady locations will produce leggy plants with fewer flowers. Great in beds and borders, in fall planters, or as cut flowers. Pinch off spent flowers to encourage more blooms. A big plus for those that garden in deer country, asters are deer resistant.
